Panoramic photo: how to do it?

  Due to the availability of new technologies developed with the advent of the digital era in photography, such as the ability to create straightforward and spherical panoramas, photographers now have more options at their disposal. Earlier, several frames had to be nearly manually glued together. Now, with the right knowledge and skills (as well as a set of appropriate techniques), you can produce an impressively detailed image with a wide viewing angle.

Certain cameras (like Sony's SLT line with a translucent mirror) offer to automate the process, but since this will explain the instructions for cameras with such capabilities, it is preferable to concentrate on the "manual" creation of panoramas in this article. As many as twenty frames may need to be adhered together in this process, but typically only five are required for a panorama.

You can glue frames in a variety of programs, the most common is Adobe Lightroom or Photohop. Someone prefers PTGui for simplicity, but this is a matter of taste. The most difficult thing in creating a panorama 360 is the correct creation of a landscape, which is different from the usual shooting with any lens.

To do this, you will need:

  • actually, a camera with an acceptable quality (let the matrix have at least 10 megapixels);
  • a tripod with a panoramic "head", someone uses a "video head", but then the camera is much more difficult without the habit of holding with strictly vertical or horizontal movement;
  • lens. Try not to use the "wide" angle, which usually helps to create a photo with a large viewing angle. If you want to create spherical panoramas, you can take it, but for a simple panorama without distortions, such a lens is not suitable. You can see unexpected distortions on objects close to the camera. You can take a lens with a fixed focal length, for example, 50 or 135 with a good indicator of aperture.
  • The "panoramic photographer" usually tries to use a trigger cable as well.

The optimal result can be achieved if you make several vertical frames with an overlap, with an intersection of 50 percent. The program will not be able to mount the frames butt into a beautiful panorama. It is also convenient if the shooting takes place from the hands, and it is easier to make vertical shots in this position.

It is desirable to fix the exposition on AE-L / AF-L, if you plan to make about five frames. In the future, if, of course, the shooting takes place in RAW format, the exposure can be adjusted programmatically: it will be slightly different in different frames.

Otherwise, difficulties should not arise, the only advice is to create panoramic photos with a small number of moving objects in sight. The best panorama is an image with static objectsa.
